A university dean in Virginia has resigned from his role after calling Joe Biden supporters “ignorant, anti-American and anti-Christian” online.

The comments made on his privateFacebook account were made public after someone screenshot and circulated them.

The institution confirmed on its website that Dr Paul Ewell resigned from his post.

He has also left his role as professor of management, business and economics at the Virginia Wesleyan University.

On Facebook he told supporters of the president-elect to “unfriend” him and accused them of corrupting the election, as well as “our youth… our country.”

His recent comments were retweeted by President Donald Trump, who shared an article mentioning the former dean’s comments.

Mr Trump captioned the post with the word “Progress!” as a seemingly show of approval for Dr Ewell’s comments.

More from Democratic Party

University spokesperson Stephanie Smaglo said last week that the former professor had apologised for his comments.

Mr Ewell is reported to have told the university’s student newspaper – the Marlin Chronicle – that he was upset when he made the remarks and regrets his comments.

He said: “I have friends and family who are Democrats, and I love them dearly.

“I have apologised on both accounts profusely. I set a poor example in that post of what a Christian should be.

“I know that God has forgiven me and already died for my sins. I hope others will forgive me as well.”

Dr Ewell added: “We all need to be a little less quick to anger and a little more willing to forgive, and that certainly applies to me. I am a Christian work-in-progress for sure.”
