The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have revealed some happy news during their bombshell chat with Oprah Winfrey.

Harry and Meghan, who are expecting their second child, announced to the chat show queen that they are having a girl, due in the summer.

It was a positive note to an otherwise explosive interview, in which the couple did not hold back from telling Winfrey what life was like as senior royals.

As well as explaining their reasons for leaving the UK, Harry and Meghan pulled back the curtain on their “fairytale” day-to-day life in California – and also revealed that they were actually married privately three days before the formal ceremony that was watched by millions in 2018.

Announcing their baby news, a little sister for Archie, the couple said their daughter will complete their family, with Meghan saying: “Two is it.”

Harry said his first thought was “amazing” when he discovered the sex of his unborn child, adding: “Just grateful. To have any child, any one or any two, would have been amazing.

“But to have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for? Now we’ve got our family, we got the four of us and our two dogs.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the pregnancy in February, releasing a black and white photo of themselves showing Meghan’s bump.

The news came after the duchess suffered a miscarriage in 2020.

Baby Sussex will be the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s 10th or 11th great-grandchild, depending on whether she arrives before or after Zara Tindall’s baby, also due in 2021.

Harry and Meghan’s baby news was a happy note in an interview that had numerous jaw-dropping claims about the Royal Family.

They described going through an ordeal – but Meghan said that their life together now is “greater than any fairytale you’ve ever read”.

While the interview itself was conducted at a nearby property, filming also took place at the couple’s home in Montecito, a celebrity enclave west of Los Angeles.

Dressed casually and showing Winfrey their chicken coop, Meghan said they welcomed the chance to “live authentically” and wanted to get back to “basics”.

Meghan claims Archie’s skin colour was discussed

Towards the end of the programme, Harry opened up on life in lockdown in sunny California, saying how much he enjoys taking Archie for walks on the beach.

“This year has been crazy for everybody but to have outdoor space where I can go for walks with Archie and we can go for walks as a family and with the dogs, and go for hikes or go down to the beach which is so close, all of these things are just…

“I guess the highlight for me is sticking him on the back of a bicycle in his little baby seat and taking him on these bike rides, something which I was never able to do when I was young.”

At the end of the interview, Meghan told Winfrey the family is now “thriving” after their “ordeal”.

She said: “And now because we’re actually on the other side, we’ve actually not just survived but are thriving, this.. miracles. I think all of those things I was hoping for have happened. And this is in some ways is just the beginning for us.”

Winfrey asked if Meghan’s story with a prince “does have a happy ending”, to which she replied: “It does. Greater than any fairytale you’ve ever read.”

Harry told Winfrey that Meghan had “saved” him and said he believed there was a “bigger purpose” – and “other forces” had been involved.

Meghan said she disagreed, and that Harry “saved all of us” – making a decision that “certainly saved my life and saved all of us”.
